Queen of the Midlands

A new queer history group in Nottingham has been set up. Strange as it may seem, this is just the second such group outside London, Brighton Ourstory Project being the first in 1989. Good to hear that important regional queer history is being recorded.

Nottingham has long been a hot bed of sexual culture - things were so lively in the Second World War that the police were said to wear their trousers back to front. In the Thirties the Peach Tree was the famous queer pub and camp parties were rife. By the Fifties the reputation of the 'Queen of the Midlands' as the gayest spot in the country was second only to Brighton.

The Nottingham Working Group has been funded with £22,000 of Millennium lottery money. A History Day was successfully held in April despite a fascist demonstration outside the building organised by the National Front.

Video and audio life story recording is planned and donations are welcome to what sounds like an already impressive archive. We wish our Midlands sisters and brothers the best of luck.
