Amy and the Divine Miss Creak

A new biography of Amy Levy (see newsletter 7) documents the young poet's passion for her headmistress at Brighton High School for Girls. In about 1876 Levy reports excitedly in a letter to a schoolfriend that Miss Creak, the headmistress 'has flung out minute crumbs of sweetness lately to her wormy admirer, who bagged a divine, passion-inspiring- whenever-I-think-of-it-embrace today at the sanctum door. Frankly I'm more in love with her than ever - isn't it grim?'

Amy Levy: Her Life and Letters by Linda Hunt Beckman is published by Ohio University Press.
